Vessels Can Now Connect to Shore Power at Larsneset in Harstad, Norway

24.01.2025

Harstad Havn is proud to announce the availability of shore power for ships at Larsneset. This new facility complements the existing shore power infrastructure at Stangnes, reducing harmful emissions and noise from port operations while significantly lowering fuel consumption.

Shore power enables vessels to switch off their engines and connect to the electrical grid while docked. Plug Harstad—a company jointly owned by Harstad Havn and Plug Nord AS, each holding a 50% share—has invested approximately NOK 11 million in this new facility. The system is designed to supply electricity to smaller cruise ships and other vessels using low-voltage shore power. The project received NOK 2.4 million in funding from Enova, with the remaining investment provided by the owners.

Harstad Havn is a key player in Northern Norway’s maritime sector, contributing significantly to freight handling and passenger traffic. Over the past decade, the port has continuously upgraded and modernized its quay infrastructure to meet current and future customer needs. With a strong environmental focus and ambitious projects, including ongoing development at Rødskjær, the port demonstrates its commitment to sustainable growth and regional economic development. The port now offers shore power at three quays in Stangnes and one at Larsneset.

Plug Nord, a regional partnership in Northern Norway, includes Plug AS, Nordkraft Prosjekter AS, Lofotkraft Muligheter AS, Trollfjord AS, Andøy Energi AS, and Vesterålskraft AS. The company designs, builds, owns, and operates shore power facilities across the region, leveraging Plug AS’s expertise from similar projects elsewhere in Norway and abroad. Plug operates facilities in Bergen, Ålesund, and Stokmarknes, as well as Montrose in Scotland.

Thor Mathiassen, Head of Operations and Property at Harstad Havn, expressed pride in this milestone: “The launch of shore power at Larsneset marks a significant expansion of our green energy services. By adopting innovative solutions like shore power, we not only reduce our environmental impact but also strengthen Harstad Havn’s position as a leading sustainable port.”

Gunnar Hegstad, Managing Director of Plug Nord, added: “We are proud to have partnered with local companies such as Harstad Elektro and Noranett to bring this project to life. We hope the people of Harstad will experience the benefits through improved air quality and reduced noise from port operations. We look forward to continuing our collaboration with Harstad Havn to realize its vision of becoming the preferred port in Northern Norway.”
